COMPOSERS CLUB

by Orpheus Chamber Orchestra

Composer Feature: Timo Andres

Twenty-nine year old Timo Andres first came to Orpheus’ attention as a finalist for the orchestra’s Project 440 commissioning initiative in 2011. A graduate from the Yale School of Music and currently living in Brooklyn, Timo has already earned broad recognition for his commanding musical statements. Known for blending multiple musical influences within classical forms, Timo’s music has been described by The New Yorker critic Alex Ross as achieving “an unhurried grandeur that has rarely been felt in American music since John Adams came on the scene.”

This season Timo creates his first new work for Orpheus entitled Word of Mouth, as part of the orchestra’s American Notes series that explores our current American identity from a variety of different perspectives. Word of Mouth premieres at Carnegie Hall on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at 7PM.

Join the Orpheus Composers Club!

Orpheus’ new initiative for appreciators of living artists and new music.

Since its founding in 1972, Orpheus has collaborated with over 40 composers to create new orchestral works. The orchestra’s commitment is two-fold: to support the artistry of living composers, giving them resources and opportunities to develop their vision, and to expand the orchestral tradition into the 21st century.

American Notes

During the 2014-2015 Season, Orpheus will premiere three new works commissioned by the orchestra, each exploring aspects of current American identity in a globalized world.

Be an Orpheus new music commissioner. Your support ensures the artistic success of Orpheus’ three world premieres – for as little as $5 per commission.

A standard-bearer of innovation and artistic excellence, the Grammy Award- winning Orpheus Chamber Orchestra is renowned as one of the world’s foremost chamber orchestras. Founded in 1972, Orpheus performs without a conductor, combining the intimacy of a chamber ensemble with the richness of a full orchestra.

Annually, Orpheus serves over 30,000 people around the world, having presented over 300 tours to 50 countries on four continents. To date, the orchestra has created a recording catalogue of more than 70 albums and has expanded the chamber orchestra repertoire by 43 new works. Orpheus’ award-winning educational programs engage over 2,500 students around the world each year through in-class school visits, access to working rehearsals, and free tickets to concerts – nurturing the next generation of music-makers and appreciators.
